Central, well-connected, and full of international amenities. Jing'an is where most expats start — and many choose to stay.
Best for
Jing'an sits in the heart of Puxi — west of the Bund, north of the Former French Concession, and directly connected to People's Square by Line 2. It has more international supermarkets, English-friendly restaurants, and easy transport links than almost any other part of Shanghai. If you are arriving for the first time and do not yet know which part of the city suits you, Jing'an is the lowest-friction starting point.
At a glance
Jing'an district covers the area roughly between Nanjing West Road in the south, Suzhou Creek in the north, and Zhongshan Park in the west. The southern part — around Jing'an Temple and Nanjing West Road — is where most expats live.
Jing'an feels like a proper international city neighbourhood. Busy streets, fast delivery, international brands alongside local options, and a strong weekend brunch scene. Less character than the FFC, more convenience than anywhere else.
Jing'an attracts expats who prioritise ease of setup, central access, and a walkable neighbourhood with strong expat infrastructure.
Getting around
Jing'an has some of the best metro access in Shanghai. Multiple lines pass through the district, giving direct connections to most of the city.
Jing'an Temple station connects directly to People's Square, Nanjing Road, Lujiazui in Pudong, and Pudong Airport. The most useful line for most daily journeys.
Passes through Changshu Road, Jing'an Temple, and Changping Road. Useful for reaching Xujiahui in the south and Changzhong Road in the north.
Lines 12 and 13 add coverage through Changshu Road, Jing'an Temple, and Xikang Road, and connect to South Shanghai Station and broader Puxi.
Didi pickups are fast in Jing'an at almost any hour. Useful for late nights, large grocery shops, and reaching destinations between metro lines.
Renting
Jing'an has a mix of modern high-rise apartments, older walk-up buildings, and some serviced apartment options. It is not the cheapest area, but the supply is high and quality is generally reliable.
Large modern apartment complexes with lift, security, and facilities are common near Jing'an Temple. Streets further north like Jiaozhou Road have older walk-up buildings with more character at lower prices.
A modern 1-bedroom in central Jing'an typically costs more than comparable apartments in Changning or Minhang, but you pay for location and convenience. Prices vary significantly by street and building age.
Most landlords prefer 12-month leases. Some serviced apartments offer shorter terms at a premium. Agents typically charge one month's rent as a fee. Residence registration is required within 24 hours of moving in.
Honest assessment
Nowhere in Shanghai is easier to set up in quickly. Everything you need is within walking distance or a short metro ride.
The grid street layout, clear metro signage, and density of English-friendly services make early weeks significantly easier.
You pay a premium for centrality. Families needing larger apartments often get better value in Changning, Minhang, or Jinqiao.
Jing'an is modern and convenient, but lacks the tree-lined lanes and heritage architecture that makes the Former French Concession feel distinctive.
