International schools, compound living, green space, and more room than anywhere in Puxi. Jinqiao is where most expat families in Pudong plant their first roots.
Best for
Jinqiao is a sub-district of Pudong, roughly 20 kilometres east of central Shanghai. It has developed over decades into one of Shanghai's largest international residential areas — driven primarily by the proximity of several well-regarded international schools and the availability of villa compounds with facilities that central Shanghai apartments rarely offer. It is a very different lifestyle from Jing'an or the FFC: more suburban, more car-dependent, but significantly more space for the same budget.

Jinqiao sits in northern Pudong, between the inner ring road and the outer ring road. It is closer to Pudong Airport than to People's Square — plan transport accordingly.
Jinqiao is defined by gated compounds — low-rise villas, townhouses, and apartment blocks with shared facilities including pools, gyms, tennis courts, and playgrounds. The street-level experience is quieter and more car-oriented than central Shanghai.
Jinqiao is almost exclusively chosen for family and school reasons. Single professionals and couples without children rarely choose it over central Shanghai options.
The main reason families choose Jinqiao
Jinqiao and the surrounding Pudong area have a high concentration of international schools serving the expat community. School access is the primary driver for most families who choose this area.
International school places in Pudong can be limited and competitive. Confirm enrolment before signing a lease — your child's school should determine your target neighbourhood, not the reverse.
Most international schools run school bus networks that cover wider parts of the city. Confirm whether your compound is on a bus route before assuming your child will need local school access.
Popular international schools in Pudong frequently have waiting lists, especially at primary level. Start the application process as soon as your relocation is confirmed, ideally 6 to 12 months before arrival.
Getting around
Jinqiao's transport situation is the most common trade-off families accept. Metro access is limited compared to Puxi, and most daily logistics rely on Didi or a personal vehicle.
Line 6 connects Jinqiao Road station toward Century Avenue and interchange hubs in central Pudong. From Jinqiao Road, reaching Puxi requires a transfer, typically adding 20 to 30 minutes.
Most Jinqiao residents use Didi for school runs, grocery shops, and reaching the metro interchange or office parks. Journey times vary significantly with traffic, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
Pudong Airport (PVG) is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car from most Jinqiao compounds — significantly faster than from central Puxi. Useful for frequent travellers.
Many Jinqiao expat families keep a car or use a driver for school runs and weekend activities. Compound parking is typically included or available. Decide early whether your budget and lifestyle need a vehicle.
Renting
Jinqiao offers the best value for floor space in the broader Shanghai expat market. Families can often afford a 3 or 4 bedroom villa or townhouse for the cost of a smaller apartment in central Jing'an.
Gated compounds offering detached villas, row houses, and apartment blocks with shared facilities are the dominant housing type. Facilities typically include a pool, gym, playground, and 24-hour security.
A 3-bedroom villa or townhouse in Jinqiao typically offers much more floor space than a comparable budget would buy in Jing'an or the FFC. This is the area's primary value proposition for families.
Unlike self-managed older apartments in Puxi, most Jinqiao compounds have on-site management for repairs, cleaning common areas, and handling utilities. This simplifies day-to-day property issues.
Compare neighbourhoods
Central Puxi with excellent metro access and international amenities. Very different lifestyle — smaller apartments, no compound, but walking distance to everything.
Heritage streets, cafes, and lane houses in central Puxi. Popular with young professionals — less suitable for families needing international school access and space.
